About

One walker, one dog, one city and a short list of things this journal will not do

The useful facts about who stands behind these pages, in one place, and the boundaries that keep the subject honest.

The journal

Shade and Water records ground in and around Austin that can be walked with a dog. It began in 2024 and comes out when a route is finished rather than to a calendar.

Both the walking and the writing are Marisol Vance's. Nobody is employed here, no copy arrives from elsewhere, and a reader whose note turns into a route gets named inside it.

Why the masthead is not the address

The web address describes travel with animals, which is a large and busy trade: companies that move animals between countries, agents who handle the paperwork, firms that sell the equipment for it. This journal is none of those things and does not want to be mistaken for one.

Hence the title Shade and Water, taken from the pair of conditions that settle whether ground here can be walked at all. One is a web address and the other is a publication, and they are allowed to differ. Firms do exist whose names echo the address; not one of them is connected to this journal, and not one is printed anywhere on it.

The limits, which are the point

This journal describes ground. It does not move animals, arrange for them to be moved, sell anything for them, or hold any opinion about their health. The first three are somebody else's trade. The fourth is a qualified profession that this publication is not part of.

Anything touching an animal's health, fitness, treatment or paperwork belongs with the person who looks after that animal. A record will say that the ground was hot and the water was two miles apart. It will never say what that means for a particular dog, because it cannot know.

A tall office window in a deep painted reveal looking out over a street of low buildings and big live oaks in strong afternoon light, worn paint on the sill, nobody in frame
The window this is written under, and a fair sample of the shade problem: three trees, one street, four hours a day of usable ground.

No Texas file number is printed above, deliberately. The state issues them in one unbroken run, so any number chosen to look plausible already belongs to a real company, and putting one here would amount to wearing a stranger's registration.

Four years separate the registration of this web address from the first issue, because the address came second hand. What the year above records is when the walking began, and no sentence on this site borrows the older date.

Reaching the desk

Telephone +1 (737) 415-2860 inside desk hours, write to shade@travelpetadventures.com, or use the form on the contact page. A note about something written wrong is answered before anything else.
